Sleep deprivation nearly cost me my life—more than once.

A few years back --after a long night shift, I once fell asleep behind the wheel. I woke up to the sound of my tires scraping the guardrails as my car veered toward the Chattanooga River. Another time, I crashed my car driving home exhausted. And heartbreakingly, a colleague of mine wasn’t as lucky, he fell asleep at the wheel after a shift and never made it home.

Those moments changed me forever. Sleep deprivation isn’t just about being tired. Far too many people are burning the candle at both ends, unaware that sleep deprivation is silently destroying their health. The danger doesn’t always show up right away--but when it does, it can be deadly.

Like so many high achievers and people-pleasers, I pushed past exhaustion--saying yes to extra projects, late-night deadlines, and endless tasks. I was running on fumes, sacrificing sleep night after night, without realizing the damage it was doing.

I am a survivor. And that’s why today, I’ve made it my mission to speak up for sleep health, burnout, mental wellbeing, and for those who may not realize they’re one blink away from disaster.
